Stevie's The Message

from Reality Alley by Kevin Stevenson

/

about

When I was young, life wasn't so good, and I felt very sorry for myself. I would think, "Who could have it worse than me?" Then one Friday night I was watching Don Kershner's Rock Concert. I forget who played, but if you waited until the set was finished, you got to see promotional videos. You have to remember: no MTV yet in the Stevenson household. This was 1982. I saw the video for The Message by Grandmaster Flash, filmed in the ghettos of Brooklyn. Once I saw that video, I never felt sorry for myself ever again. There are lots of people who have had it a lot harder than me. Watching that video marked the moment that I stopped feeling sorry for myself, and that is a very important thing. That is the reason I included Grandmaster Flash's lyrics in my song, "Stevie's The Message". It will forever remind me of that important change in my life, and where it came from.
